Top Ten Conditions Treated in 2021

As 2022 begins, I thought I’d take a look at what the top ten conditions were that we treated in clinic last year.

Every geographic region has its own unique set of common health conditions. Tropical diseases prevail near the equator; slips & sprains prevail in northern climates, etc.

Likewise, different years present with different diseases. The pandemic made this abundantly clear, but even in non-pandemic years, different health conditions tend to crop up more than others.

The list below is by no means complete, but it does give us all a peak into what kinds of conditions were the most common in 2021!

Low Back Pain

Low back pain, also known as lumbar pain, is by far the most common complaint that people have in the Halifax Regional Municipality. This comes as no surprise, since it is the most common complaint in North America!

Low back pain can be dull & widespread or sharp & precise. It can include nerve pain, such as sciatic nerve pain.

Low back pain can have many different causes, including:

  • Muscle strain
  • Traumatic injury
  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Inflammation

At Access Acupuncture, we address both the symptoms & causes of low back pain simultaneously.

In most cases, our acupuncture techniques provided instant natural pain relief & kickstarted the body’s natural healing processes.

The average course of treatment for maximum recovery was between ten & twenty treatments.

Headaches & Migraines

Headaches & migraines are one of the main reasons that people take sick days from work. A 2009 study determined that headaches & migraines affect one in every six people & cause over $13 billion in losses.

It’s no great surprise, then, that headaches & migraines are also one of the most common conditions that we’ve treated in clinic over the years.

Often times, patients will come in for another, seemingly unrelated condition, & mention in passing that they also suffer from headaches. We regularly treat headaches & migraines alongside other complaints.

Whether patients came specifically for headache & migraine treatment or whether it was treated as a secondary condition, most headache & migraine symptoms resolved within five to ten treatments of acupuncture & herbs.

Anxiety

Anxiety can take on many forms, ranging from mild feelings of persistent worry or insomnia to shortness of breath, heart palpitations & panic attacks.

In previous years, we treated many different causes of anxiety. The anxiety of the last year, however, was dominated by Covid-19: people were worried about their health & the health of their loved ones; many people experienced anxiety due to isolation as well.

Luckily, acupuncture & Chinese medicine work wonders for anxiety.

Using a combination of acupuncture, herbs, & mindfulness coaching, we were able to help easy people’s anxiety, improve their sleep, & eliminate panic attacks.

The average course of treatment was between five & twelve treatments.

Arthritis Pain

Arthritis pain affects one in five Canadians. In damp regions such as Nova Scotia, the number of people affected is even higher.

Typical arthritis symptoms include:pain, stiffness & swelling of the joints.

  • Joint Pain
  • Joint Stiffness
  • Joint Swelling

For many arthritis sufferers, these symptoms worsen in cold, damp weather.

The most common areas affected are the hands & feet, but any joint in the body can be arthritic.

By using a combination of acupuncture & herbal liniment, we managed to quickly reduce the symptoms of arthritis in under five treatments.

An average of 15 treatments provided lasting relief & prevented flareups during cold, damp days.

Menstrual Pain

Menstrual pain is consistently one of the top conditions that we see in clinic. It can be debilitating, forcing people to take time away from work, family & friends. The symptoms of menstrual pain include:

  • Lower abdominal cramps before or during menstruation
  • Painful abdominal bloating
  • Low back pain

Menstrual pain is frequently linked to hormonal imbalances but can also be caused by endometriosis, endometriosis & uterine fibroids.

The treatments for menstrual pain take into account its primary cause & can include acupuncture, herbal prescriptions & nutritional therapy.

An average course of treatment was 15 treatments over the course of three months.

Menopausal Symptoms

The hormonal changes that menopausal women naturally experience in later life often happens in an imbalanced way, leading to a variety of menopausal symptoms including:

  • Irregular periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Mood swings
  • Insomnia
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Weight gain

Acupuncture & Chinese medicine are renowned for their ability to treat menopausal symptoms.

A course of ten acupuncture treatments, supplemented with monthly tune-ups, herbs & dietary therapy greatly reduced & in several cases even eliminated the symptoms of menopause.

Neck Pain & Stiffness

Neck pain, like back pain, is often due to:

  • muscle strain (stop looking down at your phone! Hold it higher!)
  • degenertive discs
  • arthritis
  • traumatic injury (ex. Whiplash)

There is, however, another very common cause of neck pain that we see here in Nova Scotia: Torticolis, also known as wry neck.

Wry neck occurs when the neck is exposed to a cold draft for a prolonged period of time, such as sleeping with the window open on a cool night or working in an office environment under an air conditioning vent.

A combination of acupuncture, herbal liniment, movement therapy & heat can effectively correct neck pain.

Depending on the situation, a course of treatment is usually between three to ten treatments over two to three weeks.

Urinary Incontinence

This year, Julie began working with SheSpot, an integrative clinic that specializes in women’s urinary incontinence.

Using a combination of acupuncture & herbs, her success rates were stellar; patients who were afraid to even sneeze, let alone run, laugh or jump were able to fully recover their quality of life within twelve to fifteen treatments!

Plantar Fasciitis

Another common condition that presented itself in clinic last year was plantar fasciitis. This painful foot condition prevents many people from being able to stand comfortably, let alone walk or run.

Our excellent plantar fasciitis protocols – a combination of acupuncture, foot soaks & stretches – allowed our patients to conquer this pain in an average of five to eight treatments!

Digestive problems

Digestive problems encompass a wide variety of conditions, including loose bowels, constipation, intestinal pain, nausea, & acid reflux / heartburn.

Some digestive problems are associated with food, while others are related to stress or inflammation.

In all cases, patients who came to see us for treatment were given herbs, acupuncture & nutritional counseling.

Those problems associated with diet, stress or inflammation were often resolved within eight to twelve treatments.

In cases where the condition was genetic, a course of ten treatments over four weeks generally got the condition under control, & regular monthly tune-ups have proven to be an effective management strategy.

So that’s it! The top ten conditions that were treated at Access Acupuncture in 2021.
